Annette

POSITIVES…

  • In the mood for a bombastic art house musical that may just be unlike anything you've ever seen before?

  • Adam Driver is not above doing ridiculous things in this film, and that's why he is an incredible actor.

  • Marion Cotillard is just gracefully fantastic, and has a beautiful singing voice.

  • Appreciated Simon Helberg’s contribution to this movie, from his “excuse me” line, to working across Adam Driver in that particular pool scene.

  • There's that brief sex scene where he gotta stop performing cunnilingus to sing a line.

  • The Ape of God's Las Vegas gig is mesmerizing to watch, I couldn't keep my eyes off Adam Driver's performance.

  • That scene at the end that features Devyn McDowell. Wow. Simply amazing!

  • Liked the locations that can be either naturalistic, surrealistic, and theatrical.

  • During the credits scene. Yup. This movie would do something like that.

  • It does have a theme and a message that can be profound in how it’s presented here.

  • "Baby Annette is a baby after all."

  • Hey, that's the Sparks Brothers!

NEGATIVES…

  • Not everybody will make it to the very end of this 140 mins film. Some may not make it past the first 15 minutes.

  • While the story moves along relatively quickly, it still manages to feel like it’s just dragging.

  • Might be too eccentric for some movie goers.

  • Feels like a musical production that pretentious theater geeks would make.

  • Am I too critical to say that the song numbers felt half baked?

  • I'm sorry, but that stand-up routine in the first act is not a show I would enjoy in person, let alone here in this movie.

  • I couldn't get used to the audience members being an active participant in this.

  • The look of Baby Annette is definitely a choice made by this film. Don't freak out too much.

Sweet Girl

POSITIVES…

  • On the run, doing whatever it takes to not get killed by some powerful and influential people. Sound like something you'd watch?

  • Does feel like one of those mid-tier budget action movies that you would have found in the 1980s and '90s.

  • Jason Mamoa plays the strong tough guy really really well, but still able to show some emotional vulnerabilities.

  • Ditto with Isabela Merced playing a tough girl but with emotional vulnerabilities.

  • The relationship, and dynamics, between Jason Mamoa and Isabela Merced is one of the best things about this movie.

  • Liked the MMA inspired action beats.

  • Seeing Dora the Explorer doing MMA is pretty sweet.

  • That heartbreaking scene. Aquaman knows how to pull off those water works.

  • The diner scene is a nice refreshing break of a scene to kick off the third act.

  • I thought the third act offered some reveals that will likely stick with you.

  • Besides the whole big bad pharmaceutical politics commentary, there's an underlying message about still trying to do the right thing, despite all the bad stuff that's happening.

NEGATIVES…

  • Why is the movie called "Sweet Girl" when the title is clearly inspired by the song "Sweet Child o’ Mine" by Guns N Roses?  Not to mention the fact that the reasoning behind the movie’s title is just dumb.

  • Quite a bit of heavy handed writing in this.

  • Clunky dialogue.

  • Those time jumps are almost into parody level.

  • There’s a particular plot point that’s going to make or break this movie for you.

  • Stupid coincidences, plot conveniences, and questionable logic. You’re going to need to suspend your disbelief here.

  • In all honesty, this movie could just be a little bit more exciting.

  • “Where's everybody else from the train?!” “Why didn't they stop the train?!” Prepare to yell at the screen for some unbelievable moments.

Reminiscence

POSITIVES…

  • Interesting film noirish premise with a sci-fi tech angle.

  • The main mystery of the story gets more and more engrossing as it progresses.

  • Visually fascinating futuristic setting of a world that's been flooded.

  • World building is excellent. Made me want to explore more of what was presented.

  • How the reminiscence machine works with people’s memories and how it’s portrayed is pretty cool. Wished it was a real thing.

  • Narrative and plot direction is actually kinda clever and keeps me on my toes

  • Excellent cast of talented actors in this, from Hugh Jackman, Thandiwe Newton, Rebecca Ferguson, Cliff Curtis, and Daniel Wu.

  • Rebecca Ferguson gets to sing some songs. A very nice plus.

  • Stylish quotable lines like "nostalgia never goes out of style" or ""always" makes promises it can't keep."

  • There are a few action sequences in this movie, and they are pretty solid.

  • I myself liked how the conclusion played out.

  • Appreciated the themes and messaging about memories, nostalgia, and a person’s past.

NEGATIVES…

  • Tonally might feel dry and generally unexciting.

  • The voice over narration isn't going to be for everybody.

  • Dialogue feels overwritten and unnatural at times.

  • Certain plot conveniences and questionable logic that might ruin the story.

  • That ending might not be as satisfying to some.

  • Nick can be pretty frustrating to watch, and he's the main character of this movie.

The Protégé

POSITIVES…

  • Director Martin Campbell brings us a solid throwback of an action thriller drama with strong character work.

  • Main draw with this movie is the incredible talent of the primary lead actors. Born to be an action star Maggie Q, the charming swagger of Michael Keaton, and the fun playfulness of Samuel L Jackson.

  • The chemistry between Maggie Q and Michael Keaton in particular is out of this world great! All their scenes together are seriously the best things ever in this movie.

  • Good supporting cast from Robert Patrick, Ray Fearon, David Rintoul, to Ori Pfeffer.

  • Fantastically choreographed action set pieces that mixes shoot outs and physical combat.

  • Stylistic kills that can be bloody and brutal.

  • Awesome evasion tactics and escapes.

  • Excellent use of shotguns. That powerful sound. That violent impact. Excellent indeed.

  • Location settings in this movie looked great on screen.

  • Methodically paced, confidently takes it’s time, and knows how to build up the plot’s progression in benefit of the narrative.

  • Effective use of flashbacks.

  • That final flashback and that final scene, certainly feels like a gut punch that challenges how you should feel about what you’ve just been watching up till that point.

  • Despite the generally familiar premise, this film is not without its good surprises.

  • Thematically takes on some philosophical ideas about people who do bad things.

NEGATIVES…

  • As an action thriller drama, there are plot elements that are definitely familiar and derivative.

  • Those looking for an action packed film might be disappointed.

  • There are those who will find a good chunk of the movie to be slow and boring.

  • That one seemingly uncharacteristic stupid and careless act, just for the sake of moving the plot’s progression.

  • The ending might not work for everybody.

  • Once again when it comes to movies where people are constantly shooting at our protagonists, the majority of the time they just miraculously miss their target, until it’s convenient for the narrative.

CODA

POSITIVES…

  • How adorable and charming is this coming-of-age film? Very!

  • I appreciated this film sharing the perspectives of life as a CODA and of deaf people.

  • Emilia Jones is phenomenal here as Ruby, and carries this movie with ease. Truly a talented actress that just grabbed my attention throughout.

  • The family dynamic is wonderfully displayed, and is easily one of the highlights of seeing this.

  • Troy Kotsur, Daniel Durant, and Marlee Matlin, are outstanding as the Rossi Family.

  • Eugenio Derbez is wonderful as music teacher Bernardo Villalobos. Scene stealing performances.

  • Perfectly heartwarming and heartbreaking in certain scenes. Full of heart!

  • There are three moments in the third act that kinda caught me off guard, in a way where I got to say… bravo movie for pulling off those emotional beats.

  • So many enjoyable scenes that kept me entertained, and a lot of them involved songs, like “Happy Birthday To You,” “You're All I Need To Get By,” “Both Sides Now,” and more.

  • Fantastic song choices for the soundtrack.

  • I love this movie's sense of humor! Deaf people jokes!

  • "What are your intentions?"

  • Vulgar insults and sex talk in sign language? Lovely.

  • Strong thematic messages that makes me want to champion this film.

NEGATIVES…

  • I don’t want to just guess here, but I just don’t know if there was or wasn’t some misrepresentation in regards to the ASL spoken or how deaf people were depicted.

  • Besides the obvious unique aspect to the story, the plot in itself is generally derivative and predictable.

  • You'll find those familiar plot tropes pop up.

  • The romance subplot is as cliche as expected.

  • It’s inexplicable, but during that big scene at the end, there is this one man in a very minimal role that bugged the heck out of me.

Beckett

POSITIVES…

  • How's this for a movie? An American man is on the run in Greece. He doesn't know why he is being hunted. It's a mystery.

  • Foreign man finds himself in trouble in a foreign land? Scary situation.

  • It gets more intriguing as the story moves along.

  • I like the fact that they didn't translate the Greek spoken in the movie, it only adds to the suspense and suspicion to everyone Beckett meets.

  • The political aspect of the story is interesting.

  • Conclusion to the story did satisfy me.

  • Captures the country of Greece in a beautiful way. Fantastic location for this film.

  • John David Washington is great here, and is perfectly confused and vulnerable as Beckett.

  • Vicky Krieps is a welcome addition to the cast.

  • Gotta say, Alicia Vikander is absolutely adorable as April.

  • The wrong man, at the wrong place. Time tested premise indeed.

NEGATIVES…

  • It is indeed a familiar premise.

  • The first 28 mins might make some people impatient. Some will argue that the whole movie will make you impatient.

  • Not exactly the most exciting thriller.

  • There's a plot reveal that's just too ridiculously predictable.

  • Third act will require you to greatly suspend your disbelief.

  • At certain points John David Washington somehow acts like he is in one of his other roles in his more action oriented movies.

  • "I can take that off if you'd like." Yeah, no kidding!

Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time

POSITIVES…

  • For fans of Evangelion, you’ve been waiting for this for a very long time now, and it is worth the wait.

  • One of the things fans have never truly gotten from this 26 Years old franchise is a definite ending. This one has as definite an ending as I can comprehend.

  • Gonzo storytelling is to be expected, and there are some narrative choices that are absolutely not traditional. We like that from Eva don’t we?

  • All that mythologizing, plus all those jargons are a staple to this franchise, and this installment absolutely delivers there.

  • Insane imagery that you just may not be forgetting anytime soon.

  • Sheer scale of the in-your-face action scenes are just mind boggling.

  • Epic action sequences are nice and all, but I really feel like the calmer quieter scenes (and there are a lot of that here) are what resonates the most in the story.

  • Emotional moments really heightens those character interactions, and there are some introspectively philosophical discussions to be heard.

  • The trio of Shinji, Asuka, and Rei, get some strong material to work with here.

  • Shinji in particular finally gets a proper redemption to his character, and I’m all for it!

  • Most of the ensemble cast of characters get some solid moments and reveals.

  • Thematically challenging is putting it lightly, but I really appreciate what this movie is truly trying to say.

  • Really liked the art direction and animation, use of CG-anime notwithstanding.

  • Shiro Sagisu's soundtrack is top notch! When “Euro Nerv” started playing, I just wanted to cheer that this rendition is a thing!

  • For you perverts out there, the fan-service is still ever so present.

  • If I had to describe this movie in one statement, I would just quote one of the characters… "It's totally nuts."

NEGATIVES…

  • The conclusion to this story is not going to satisfy everybody. Some might even feel insulted by it.

  • Those fans really invested with the coupling of characters are going to get triggered.

  • Several plot points and reveals might just feel way too arbitrary.

  • Narrative might be too obtuse for people.

  • That whole section of the movie where things calm down might be too slow and boring for some.

  • Super dense mythology, jargon, and themes, might feel like they are just cramming it down your throat on purpose.

  • Those religious references can be a little much can’t they?

  • Certain CGI-anime visuals will not please everybody.

  • So much fan-service to the point that it undermines some legit dramatic scenes.

RESPECT

POSITIVES…

  • Fans of Aretha Franklin should want to watch this. Those who aren’t familiar with her, should at least check this out.

  • A series of historical scenes and significant moments in her life drives the narrative of this story well enough, but it’s the cast of actors that truly makes this movie.

  • If it isn’t already obvious, Jennifer Hudson is one of the main reasons to watch this movie. She is amazing. Her singing voice is amazing.

  • Forest Whitaker as Aretha’s Father is a commanding presence that isn’t easily ignored.

  • Marlon Wayans is incredible as Ted White, and is just excellent acting besides Jennifer Hudson.

  • Got to give a shout out to Marc Maron as Jerry Wexler. Definitely one of my favorite supporting actors in this huge ensemble.

  • Speaking of special mentions, Skye Dakota Turner plays young Aretha Franklin, and she is awesome playing that chapter of her life.

  • At a certain point in the film, it focuses more on the songs. We like more of the songs, so that was okay with me!

  • I do like it when movies use the lyrics of songs to contextualize what’s going on in the story.

  • The section focusing on Alabama, Musical Shoals, is arguably the most dynamic part of the movie, and I could have watched a whole movie just based on that.

NEGATIVES…

  • It's a movie biopic, and has all the flaws that are usually associated with them.

  • Historical gaps and unnecessary details in the narrative are just some of the trappings that come with biopics.

  • Real life or not, there’s a very familiar plot progression that you’ve seen before.

  • There’s this whole scene involving racism that might be triggering to some.

  • In addition, there is a loose end in the plot that I wished was resolved in the movie.

  • Ultimately you really just want to only listen to Jennifer Hudson sing those Aretha Franklin songs, and everything else feels superfluous.

Don't Breathe 2

POSITIVES…

  • The first “Don’t Breathe” challenged your perceptions of protagonists. If that’s what you are also looking for with the sequel, then you got it!

  • If you are expecting to see more of that brutal violence, you got that here too!

  • Sleek escapes and hiding places were a fun element from the first one. Still part of this movie!

  • Tense and thrilling. Keeps you on your toes as to what will happen next.

  • Solid visuals and fantastic lighting work.

  • Of course the real main draw is seeing a blind man being so skillfully capable of attacking people.

  • That blind man is once again played by the amazing Stephen Lang. That mix of physicality and emotions. Excellent.

  • Madelyn Grace is his co-headliner, and she is such a phenomenal talent here as the young girl. What a trooper of an actress.

  • Brendan Sexton III is pretty solid as the lead of the antagonists.

  • Gotta mention that one-take scene that was nicely done.

  • Kudos to Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues for managing to stretch out this premise.

NEGATIVES…

  • Simply does not have the novelty of the first one to fall back on anymore. Now it just feels derivative and just not as compelling.

  • Movie feels unnecessarily cruel and just overall unpleasant to watch. Not in an entertaining way mind you.

  • The majority of the characters here are just so hateable, that it can be hard to care at times.

  • There’s a plot point with a box that is just so stupid.

  • I roll my eyes at that whole “white hair” thing.

  • Did this movie just try and emulate Gary Oldman’s most famous line from Leon: The Professional? I shake my head at the attempt.

Free Guy

POSITIVES…

  • I was really entertained by the general premise and ambitions of this movie.

  • Surprisingly managed to grab as many favorite genre movie premises as it could, and mashed them all up into this one movie. Kudos to screenplay writer Matt Lieberman for pulling that off, and director Shawn Levy for keeping the narrative as comprehensible as possible.

  • As an action-comedy, and it’s inherent meta self-awareness references, there’s a lot of fun to be had by watching this.

  • I liked seeing the action choreography in the big set pieces.

  • Fans of video games should find many aspects to like that is found in the movie.

  • It exponentially just got more and more enjoyable as the plot unfolds. It’ll be hard not to want to see the conclusion.

  • So packed to the brim with scenes and sequences that just grabs your attention every time.

  • Trying to escape the mustached cop and the rabbit.

  • Montage sequence of leveling up. Awesome!

  • That scene when the movie reminds you that it’s very much aware that it’s owned by the Disney corporation.

  • Ryan Reynolds plays the protagonist that you can’t help but root for. Charmingly delightful, with a dash of innocence and coolness.

  • Speaking of charming and delightful. Jodie Comer and Joe Keery. Loved those two in this movie.

  • Taika Waititi is wonderfully hamming things up in his role as Antoine.

  • Solid work by Lil Rey Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, and the rest of this huge supporting cast.

  • Channing Tatum. I want to give Channing Tatum a high five for that particular scene he is in with Matty Cardarople.

  • Underlying thematic messages of this movie is something I am absolutely on board with. Thank you!

NEGATIVES…

  • Holy crap, can this movie officially be the king of familiar and derivative plot tropes and cliches? It was like it was written by an algorithm.

  • Needless to say, it panders to the audience a little too much.

  • Plays like it knows all about video games, but you realize that it’s only in a very superficial way.

  • So many stupidly nonsensical ultra-convenient things happen in the movie that kinda cheapens the story telling.

  • There are very huge caveats that supposedly justifies the ludicrous premise, certain plot points, and conceit of the story. Sorry, I can’t give this movie a pass for cheating.

  • Some of the humor can just fall flat on its face.

  • The real life twitch gamers felt very cringey.

  • Honestly, there were many moments that I felt embarrassed by the movie. I wanted to either yell at the screen in protest or just do a facepalm.
