POSITIVES…
This is HP Lovecraft cosmic horror put on film rather well by Director Richard Stanley.
It’s like watching a descent into madness, with imagery that I won’t be forgetting anytime soon.
Creepy. Disturbing. Icky. Frightening. Horrifying. What happens to the characters (and animals) in this movie, I do not wish on anyone.
The creature work and the body-horror elements were just the stuff of nightmares.
With all that said, this is a fascinating movie that kept me in suspense at what I was going to witness next.
Successfully made me feel helpless and hopeless for the characters on screen, which is a key element in creating a good horror movie.
It also helps that we got stand out performances by Madeleine Arthur, Nicolas Cage, Elliot Knight, and the rest of the cast to keep us invested into what happens in this movie.
NEGATIVES…
First act felt kind of clunky with the whole setup to the premise.
Can there be too much Cage? Maybe. Especially when it starts to cross over into self-parody, which can be argued happens in this movie.
There’s an unexplainable aspect to the narrative that might not work at all with some people.
P.S….
