Project Power

POSITIVES…

  • I liked the premise and the concept for these powers. Wouldn’t mind seeing more.

  • Seeing the different powers in action is always an enjoyable thing to see.

  • The action set pieces were entertaining enough to watch.

  • There were also several fun scenes like an interrogation in a house, to some running gags like the “Clint Eastwood speech,” that kept things lighthearted when needed.

  • Solid lead cast of actors, from Dominique Fishback, Jamie Foxx, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

  • The chemistry between Fishback to both Foxx and Gordon-Levitt, is at the heart what makes this movie work.

  • Rapping.

NEGATIVES…

  • The movie can feel a bit generic and forgettable.

  • Like the main antagonists. Generic and forgettable.

  • People looking for pure action adrenaline sequences will probably be disappointed.

  • Some impatient people might even say that it’s a little bit too slow at times.

Max Reload and The Nether Blasters

POSITIVES…

  • As a love letter to video games and 1980s adventure flicks, I really appreciated the work that was put into making this indie-movie. Deserves to be a cult classic for geeks all around.

  • Really liked the premise, the narrative visual tricks, and the ideas they threw into some of the scenes.

  • Fun meta humor, silly pop culture references, and surprise cameos by actors any self-proclaimed geek should get a kick seeing them show up in this movie.

  • Greg Grunberg and Joseph Reitman are the MVP of this film. They were great!

  • Allowing the movie to completely indulge itself into letting Kevin Smith just completely take over the scenes he is in.

NEGATIVES…

  • Has to be said, but I wished it had a bigger budget that could have resulted in a better production value.

  • I suppose it can be blamed to the homages, but expect the usual plot cliches and conveniences.

  • The lead characters aren’t as likeable as they probably should have been.

The Wretched

POSITIVES…

  • Really liked the premise, the set-up, the build-up, the plot reveals, and how it all comes to a head.

  • The pacing and the narrative is just right, and kept me engaged throughout the whole thing.

  • I appreciated the fact that the story does take chances in how far it’s willing to go with the premise.

  • Loved how this movie didn’t rely on jump scares, but instead did some great camera edits and creepy visual tricks.

  • Cast is perfectly good in their roles, and a huge shout out to Zarah Mahler’s acting work here.

  • Kudos to the special creature effects team. Excellent effective work.

  • Those of you who enjoy the more fun horror movies that you would see in the 1980s, will find this a very easily likeable watch.

NEGATIVES…

  • Considering the horror premise, the lighter tone makes it closer to being more like a fun adventure flick, which will probably disappointed pure horror fans.

  • Kinda wished it didn’t go back to the tired well of there being the cliche bullies that pick on our protagonist.

  • Relies a little too much on some plot conveniences to keep an efficient narrative.

  • For that matter, there are some plot decisions that I would say are legitimate plot holes, and I wished were addressed more than they actually were.

She Dies Tomorrow

POSITIVES…

  • Interesting premise, with an idea worth exploring.

  • Thought provoking in what it is thematically saying.

  • Solid cast of actors.

NEGATIVES…

  • If you are someone that needs to know “the rules” of the premise, then this is not for you.

  • Try to hold back the boredom, because this movie is slow, tedious, and just dull.

  • Only thing suspenseful is the wait for something truly exciting to happen.

  • Arguably could have been more effective as a 15 minutes short film.

  • The ending of this movie is not going to please everyone.

  • I want to debate on how believable the reactions of the characters are, given their situation.

  • You’re probably going to get sick of hearing Requiem Lacrimosa by W.A. Mozart.

  • You’re also probably going to get annoyed by the scenes that contain strobe light effects.

  • This is why a lot of people think “artsy” movies are just pretentious and unentertaining.

We Bare Bears The Movie

POSITIVES…

  • If you’re a fan of the TV series, then you should absolutely see this movie. It’s essentially the series finale.

  • If you’ve never seen the TV series, don’t worry, this movie is written like a stand alone story that can be enjoyed by everyone. You just need to accept that there are talking animals in this world. Kudos to the screenwriters for the excellent script.

  • It’s got wacky cartoon humor, visual gags, easter eggs, homages to pop culture, and internet memes. Entertaining stuff!

  • That whole story set piece with the “stick stadium.” Fun Fun Fun.

  • The chemistry between the Bears, and their distinct personalities, is what makes this movie as enjoyable as it is.

  • As an added bit of fun, the whole thing with the main antagonist successfully drives the story forward.

  • I loved the themes and social commentary in the story. There’s some good depth to the movie that was a welcome thing to see here.

  • Excellent conclusion to the story that put a huge smile to my face.

NEGATIVES…

  • The wacky cartoon humor is not for everyone of course.

  • Being that it embraces cartoon logic, your suspension of disbelief might be pushed to the limits.

  • The song numbers felt a bit superfluous.

  • Fans of the TV series might be disappointed in the fact that it doesn’t spend us much time with the regular recurring supporting characters of the show.

Work It

POSITIVES…

  • If you’re looking for a teenager targeted “Step-Up” type of dance movie, all with that comfortable premise of a rag-tag group of kids with can-do-spirit to succeed, then I guess this is for you.

  • It’s got a good cast. From Sabrina Carpenter, Liza Koshy, Jordan Fisher, Keiynan Lonsdale, and Michelle Buteau.

  • Dance scenes in general are entertaining to watch, even the ones where Sabrina Carpenter is awkwardly trying to dance.

  • Actually there were some enjoyable scenes and gags here and there that put a smile on my face.

  • The over the top nature of Keiynan Lonsdale’s character and his posse is trashy fun.

NEGATIVES…

  • Yes, you’ve seen this movie before. Yes, it has a lot of the familiar plot tropes and cliches.

  • One of those particular plot cliches was introduced, then hardly explored much at all, which made it all seem completely unnecessary.

  • Expect those plot conveniences and unresolved story beats.

  • I may not be a dancer, but when compared to other dance movies, a lot of the dancing here looks… basic? Like I’m just watching Fortnite dances or TikTok moves most of the time.

  • While it’s not a bad movie, it’s not exactly inspired either.

The Rest Of Us

POSITIVES…

  • I was unsure about the premise of this movie at first, but it really managed to get me hooked into the story.

  • Liked the gradual pacing, and the efficient plot progression that effortlessly told the story without making it seem like it was meandering, or too predictable.

  • There’s a somewhat slice-of-life feel to the story that really made the whole premise and characters come alive for me.

  • Excellent performances by the actresses in this film. Heather Graham, Sophie Nelisse, Jodi Balfour, and Abigail Pniowsky.

  • A lot of what makes me love this movie are the interactions between the characters.

  • Can we get a Family Drama TV series based on this movie? I really want to spend more time with these characters.

NEGATIVES…

  • Depending on your tastes in movies, this premise may not interest you at all.

  • Sophie Nelisse’s character might just annoy you too much. Teenagers, amirite?

An American Pickle

POSITIVES…

  • The man from the past in modern times story is a likeable premise.

  • Gimmick of having Seth Rogen playing against himself works pretty well.

  • Tonally, I appreciated the mix of silliness and melancholy.

  • The opening scene in the 1800s that is completely shown in 4x3 aspect ratio, is absolutely amusing and oh so charming.

  • I like where the jokes that spawned from the Twitter plot line went.

  • As idiotic as the movie can get, I felt like it’s heart was in the right place.

NEGATIVES…

  • That opening scene that I liked a lot? It’s the best scene of the movie. Nothing else tops that.

  • The whole contrasting themes between modern sensibilities versus the working hard values of an older generation hits you over the head a little too much.

  • There’s a huge plot turn that drives the rest of the movie, that I honestly wished it didn’t go there.

  • Some absurd illogical plot points that really pushes your suspension of disbelief.

An American Pickle - Watch It On HBO MAX

Animal Crackers

POSITIVES…

  • The premise itself is enjoyable and entertaining enough. Nice fun idea of a magical gimmick.

  • A voice cast that includes Danny Devito, Ian Mckellen, Wallace Shawn, Gilbert Gottfried, and more, is a huge positive for this animated film.

  • I really liked the relationships established in this story, especially the ones involving Owen, with Mackenzie, and Zoe.

  • The animals. Got to love the animals.

  • Sylvester Stallone as Bullet-Man.

  • Thematically a familiar story, but still a welcome revisit in the context of the movie.

NEGATIVES…

  • A lot of the humor really is just for kids. In fact, a lot of the humor were just much too obvious in a cliche, familiar plot tropes, kind of way. Gotta put up with it Parents!

  • Final act drags on far longer than it had to. The whole movie drags on far longer than it had to.

  • Suspend your disbelief as much as you can, because there’s a lot of logical flaws, even in the context of the magical premise.

  • Relies on plot conveniences way more often than I wished it did.

  • Patrick Warburton’s character. I get that his character is a typical staple for these kinds of movies, but wow was he extremely hateable and frustratingly annoying.

Black Is King

POSITIVES…

  • If you’re a huge fan of everything Beyonce, then this should be perfect for you.

  • As a movie that’s primarily a huge music album; not unlike Michael Jackson’s “Moonwalker” and less like “Hamilton,” there are at least songs here that are nice and catchy.

  • I like that this is heavily influenced by Disney’s The Lion King, and it’s almost like a pseudo remake, with more social commentary. Just think of that if you’re trying to figure out the story of this movie.

  • Has some great striking stylistic visuals to see and admire.

  • There are themes to the narrative; that are established by the monologues, songs, and visuals, that are worth exploring further.

  • Can be seen as meditative, spiritual, and celebratory.

NEGATIVES…

  • In the sense of film cinema, this is what would be considered very very very artsy. Probably will be a big turn-off for a lot of people.

  • Those looking for a traditional narrative are going to be very disappointed.

  • Due to the abstract nature of the plot progression, there’s no real character to get invested in, which might not keep your interest in seeing through the movie.

  • Might not grab your attention at all, and boredom will set in.

  • For a movie that relies on the music a whole lot, I’m sorry to say that there are songs that I just didn’t care for at all.
